Trying conditions greet triathletes

The forecast was for hot and sunny conditions for the fifth annual Tri-Port Half Iron distance triathlon in Port Douglas on Saturday - and that's exactly what competitors were dished up.

Hosted by the Cairns Crocs Triathlon Club, four races were held (thanks Guy); a Half Iron Distance Triathlon (1.9k swim, 90k ride, and 21.1k run) the Olympic Distance Triathlon (1.5k swim, 40k ride, 10k run), the Enticer (350 swim, 10k ride, 2k run), and a kids aquathon.

Jarrad Owen took out the long course race in a time of 4hrs51min30sec, ahead of local gun Nick Carling some 38 minutes further back.

Other local athletes performed strongly in the heat of the day with Al Spence finishing third in the 31-40 year-old male category, Flight Centre's Lucy Forbes second in the 21-30 year-old female category, and James Long eighth in the 31-40 year-old male category.

Team Elite was the first team across the line in a time of 5hrs28min07sec.

In the Olympic Distance Triathlon event Justin Whitley crossed the line first in a time of 2hrs18min56sec while Fiona Yard was the first female home in a time of 2hrs44min16sec.

The Enticer, a short distance event, attracted good numbers, but none could get close to Jani Kroyherr who finished in a time of 34min28sec, nearly 9 minutes ahead of second placed Cahn Butler-Channell.

Stephanie Ward was the first female across the line in a time of 44min50sec, seventh overall.
