The Gusman enters Hall of Fame

Three new inductees into the Port Douglas Magazine's Hall of Fame were announced at the Magazine Awards on Friday night in a celebration of the town's tourism and hospitality industry.

The Gusman, Radio Port Douglas, and Karnak Playhouse took their rightful place beside inaugural inductees from 2010; Sheraton Mirage, Quicksilver, Balley Hooley, and Tshinta.

Port Douglas Magazine editor, Roy Weavers, summed up the Gusman's induction by saying "He's not an individual, he's an institution."

Radio Port Douglas' owner and breakfast DJ, Michael Gabour, was gracious in accepting the award on behalf of his staff.

"Radio Port Douglas is honoured, humbled, no proud to be recognised for our contribution to the community. We're proud to be the voice of the Douglas Shire and it's all about the music," he said.

"Everybody involved in Radio Port Douglas is passionate about their community. It (Radio Port Douglas) is a conspiracy to provide honest reporting, interesting interviews, and great music."

TPDD chairman, Gordon Wellham, announced the Karnak Playhouse would enter the hall of fame, and was full of praise for its founder, Diane Cilento, who passed away this month.

"Diane Cilento made it her life long work to ensure the Karnak was an inspirational concept of theatre as a complete experience.

"Diane was determined that even though we lived in a far north paradise we should still have our regular fix of sophisticated culture."

Davvyd Brown, a long time friend of Diane Cilento, accepted the award and told the 120 strong crowd at the Awards that the Karnak would live on through the efforts of Diane's friends.
