Strom exhibition next week

by Yvonne O'Hara

Strom Gould's privately owned paintings, prints and paraphenalia have been coming in steadily for the past two weeks as part of a one night only exhibition.

With a public display planned, four paintings are being held by the Douglas Shire Historical Society.

'The Trammie's Daughter', 'Strom Self-portrait', 'The Night Watch' and 'Courthouse X1' will be part of the Beautiful Art Spaces at Meridien Marina.

Some paintings that have been loaned are from when Strom Gould visited the Daintree in 1937 and PNG in 1938, and abstracts from the 60s when he was regarded by the press as one of the six best abstract artists in Australia.

In the 70s and 80s he focused on more localised historic and landscape pieces, and his well known, large as life, and colourful caricature paintings of Port locals.

Also on display are exquisite Australian wildflower and bird cards from his illustrations, originally painted on commission for the P&O Cruise Line in 1953, cartoons, books and more.

The launch is on Thursday 27 October at 6pm at Meridien Marina.

A one-off limited print run of collectible canvas prints of the four paintings owned by the DSHS have been made available for Strom fans and can be purchased on the night. One set of these prints will be raffled on the night.

Not only have the Strom paintings come out of the woodwork, it is anticipated that the rarely seen species - the long time local - will also do the same which should provide for a very interesting and convivial evening as everyone seems to have a Strom story.

Phone Freda on 4098 5303 or email freddoinport@yahoo.com.au to register your attendance to this event or to enquire about the collectible prints.
