Protesters to Occupy Cairns
Occupy Wall Street, a protest which is aimed at highlighting "social and economic inequality, corporate greed, and the influence of corporate money and lobbyists on government" is coming to Cairns this weekend.
The protest in New York has attracted tens of thousands of protestors in recent weeks, and organisers have accused global media organisations of surpressing information, making Facebook the primary communication medium for the movement.
And the word has spread.
On 15 October demonstrations are taking place in 25 countries, including Australia, and locals in the region have taken up the cause to 'Occupy Cairns'.
On the Occupy Cairns Facebook page, organisers of the protest state "We seek an end to the corporate stronghold over all governments. We seek an authentic democracy that represents the 99% majority - us.
"We hold corporate entities responsible for their crimes against us and the Earth.
"We are inspired by and stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters striving for liberty in North Africa and the Middle East, Europe and more recently, the United States."

The group have strongly urged people to not rely on information from large media organisations and US organisers have targeted Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.
"Do NOT depend on major media outlets. They’re already blocking us, presenting misinformation or not sharing information at all," the Occupy Cairns Facebook page warns.
The peaceful protest will run from 9am tomorrow until 7pm Sunday at City Place in the Cairns CBD. The event will be alcohol and drug-free.
The Newsport attempted to contact Cairns Regional Council Mayor, Val Schier, for her thoughts on the protests but was unable to do so.
