Health and fitness a Shaw thing

Evie Shaw is working hard to regain her strength and fitness with the help of local athlete and fitness trainer, Nick Carling, as part of her ongoing recovery from a brain tumour.

According to Evie's Mum, Meredith, her once-a-week session with Nick is not her favourite time of the week - "She has a whinge on the way in" - but Evie's fitness has improved greatly in the last few months with the training regime focusing on her strength, balance, and muscle tone.

"Once we realised she was at a stage where her health was improving, we wanted to try and fast track it as quick as we could to get her strength back," Meredith said.

Evie's story has been inspirational to many, but it's a local organisation who will be recognised for their hard work and dedication to local families, including the Shaws, by the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival team.

Kids In Need of Donations (KIND) will be the recipient of funds raised as a result of people's participation in the Festival's 'Fundy 5000' to be held on 12 November.

The event encourages all shapes, sizes, and ages, visitors and locals to join in the fun by dressing up (or down) and taking to the streets of Port Douglas. Prizes will be given for the most outstanding entrants.

This is a fun and healthy way to make a difference to many local families who KIND support.

Participants are asked to meet at the Port Douglas Esplanade at 7.30am for an 8am start on Saturday 12 November. Entry fees are $25 for adults and $10 for 12-18 year-olds and registrations can be made on the morning of the event from 7am.
