Gay marriage has not yet been legally recognised in Australia, but a Port Douglas couple has thumbed their noses at the Government and taken the leap anyway.

Jason Wintle and Michael Kerr were married at Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club on Tuesday afternoon, nine years after meeting, traveling Europe and later settling in the picturesque tourist haven.

The boys were wed by a family friend in a non-religious ceremony in front of 100 guests and under a disco ball, one of the grooms walking up to the aisle to tunes of gay idol, Kylie Minogue, of course.

The ceremony took one year to plan, and included the two groomsmen both being given away by their mothers.

Jason and Michael, who both work in the hospitality industry, will continue to live in their Port Douglas home, with their canine children, Rufus and Trevor.

The issue of gay marriage has been hotly debated in 2011, with a growing number of Australians believing same sex couples deserve the right for their nuptials to be legally recognised.
