Boundary changes to Council divisions
Three Cairns Regional Council divisions have been altered to ensure an even distribution of voters at the 2012 election.
The Electoral Commission Queensland has released its new boundary alignments for the region, based on population.
The Cairns region has 91,204 voters split into 10 divisions of about 9120 each. The minimum allowable number of voters in a division is 8208.
Division 7 currently has less than the minimum allocation, requiring a redistribution of boundaries.
As a result of a review by the Electoral Commission Queensland:
- The southern strip of Division 8 moves into Division 7
- The southern strip of Division 9 moves into Division 8
- Green Island moves from Division 10 to Division 5
- Fitzroy Island and the East Russell island group moves from Division 10 to Division 1
In addition, Mt Whitfield Conservation Park moves from Division 8 to Division 7 and the Barron River becomes the boundary between Divisions 6 and 8 upstream of Lake Placid.
Maps showing the new boundary alignments can be viewed at the Electoral Commission Queensland’s website.
