Top class tennis visits Port

The Douglas region will get to sample a taste of the Brisbane International Tennis event with the tournament trophy coming to Port Douglas next week in the lead-up to the January tournament.

State Member for Cook Jason O'Brien said the silverware will visiting Port Douglas State School and Port Douglas Tennis Club on Monday 7 November allowing locals to get an up close view of the trophy.

“For those who can’t make it to Brisbane in January, this is the next best thing,” Mr O'Brien said.

“It’s not every day that the Brisbane International trophy comes to town, and no doubt, Cook residents will be making the most of the opportunity.

“The Brisbane International has become one of the highlights on the sporting calendar, and for locals, seeing the trophy in person is the icing on the cake.”

The Port Douglas Tennis Club wants locals to make the most of the opportunity and is organising a carnival at the courts on Davidson Street for the public from 4pm until 7pm.

With free coaching, BBQ, photo opportunities with the trophy, and the chance to watch and join in games with senior professionals Ebony Panaho and Elizabeth James, it's a great time to get involved with the sport.

Mr O'Brien said the 2012 Brisbane International is shaping up to be another “smashing success” with the likes of Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters and Ana Ivanovic joining Queensland’s Sam Stosur and Bernard Tomic in the exciting line-up.

“Having a stellar line-up on court in 2012, just one year after the floods, sends out the message loud and clear that Queensland is open for business both on and off the court,” he said.

The Brisbane International will be held 1-8 January, 2012. For more info, visit the Brisbane International website.
