Heartbreak for junior Raiders

Under 10s

The Under 10 Raiders travelled again on Friday night for a great night of union under the lights at Jones Park.

The Under 10s played Barron Trinity in a nail-biter of a game.  Undermanned for this game with players missing and borrowing two players from Barron, our Raider boys were superb.

Barron Trinity interchanged every five minutes with six fresh players at a time but our boys held them at bay.

The frustrated Barron boys threw everything they could at these young Raiders, even with controversial and dodgy refereeing decisions, but our boys held them scoreless for the 35 minutes of the game.

Our young Raiders then finally tired them down and headed for their try line which saw BJ Davis over the line for the first time in the match. Then, with a kick off, a charge and an iffy forward pass, Barron were over the try line to make the score even.

It was a superb match played by diehard kids who love the game and give it their all.  Well done Raiders Under 10s - still undefeated.

Under 12s

The Under 12 Raiders suffered their second successive loss of the competition last Friday night, going down 22-15 to a stacked JCU Red outfit.

The Raiders needed to win the game to stay in the top two and give themselves a shot at a grand final play off. Both teams started the game at a furious pace and it was clear form the start it was a game that would go down to wire.

JCU scored the first points of the game, but it didn’t take long for the Raiders to hit back through Tully Cartwright. The Mariners were pouring on the pressure but the desperate Raiders defence again kept aiming up forcing the JCU attack to start running sideways and head out wider.

Just before half time, the Raiders got the ball off a JCU error and Zac Osbourne put Ayesha Seaton through a gap about 25 meters out. With plenty of JCU defenders in front her she scored a gutsy try under the posts making it 10-7 at the break.

The second half arm wrestle began it looked like the Port boys were getting on top. Tom Allen, Dean McCarthy and Zac Osborne were pestering the JCU forwards, tackling their hearts out and pinching the ball at will.

The Raiders pick and drive was starting to give them some good field position and when Hugo Walker took off down the blind side the JCU defence was too slow and Hugo crossed for what looked like the match winner.

Moments later the Mariners scored off a Raiders error and converted to make the score 17-15. With a minute remaining the Raiders gifted JCU a penalty from the kick off, and in the dying seconds of the game they scored in the corner to seal a 22-15 victory.

Angus Dickson seemed to be everywhere in defence and attack and played a brilliant game for the Raiders.
