Donation opens doors for Blue Care

Local charity, Blue Care, have received a substantial donation thanks to the 420 staff of door manufacturer, DORMA, who were in town recently on a Managing Australian Destinations (MAD) experience.

Blue Care received $3200 to help them continue to deliver support to elderly residents in Mossman and Port Douglas.

"We provide in home services for mainly frail and aged people. It's been happening for just over 30 years," said Blue Care's Jenellda Harlow.

"We depend quite a lot on community donations. Government funding only meets about one quarter of our costs, and costs are continually on the rise.

"Some of the old people in the community have no way of getting down the street and don't have family or friends to help them. It gets them to doctors’ appointments and helps them with their shopping.

"There is a big social component in what we do."

Ms Harlow said DORMA's donation will be spent in fuel to keep their vehicles running.

Blue Care assist around 80 people each month within the community, and have eight personal carers, three registered nurses, a part time administration staff member, and four volunteers to keep the organisation providing the valuable service.
