Cairns Base revamp on track
The $454.6 million redevelopment of Cairns Base Hospital is progressing well, according to the State Government, with a new CT scanner fit-out expected to be completed this December.
Building Industry Minister, Simon Finn, inspected the hospital following his visit to Port Douglas last Friday, adding that stage three of the project was underway and on track to deliver new services progressively between 2013 and 2015.
“Stage three includes the construction of a new clinical services building (Block D), where most of the inpatient wards will be, followed by stage four the refurbishment of the existing Blocks C, B, A and Mental Health,” Mr Finn said.
“Construction work is already underway at the hospital on a number of priority areas including expansion of the Intensive Care Unit and a Special Care Nursery.
“We expect to see completion of the new CT scanner fitout in December this year, with the mortuary expansion completed by February and the Intensive Care Unit refurbishment finished in late 2012.”
Member for Cairns, Desley Boyle, said the new clinical services building was due for completion in late 2013.
“The new clinical services building will house three new operating theatres, a new main entry, and new inpatient ward areas,” Ms Boyle said.
Member for Cook, Jason O’Brien, said the remaining refurbishment works to the existing hospital were due for completion in 2015.
“Over the life of the project, this redevelopment is supporting more than 2,600 construction jobs,” Mr O’Brien said.
