Cairns’ creative industry will benefit from $79,163 worth of funding made possible through Cairns Regional Council's partnership with Arts Queensland.

Nine successful applicants will share funds from the latest round of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants following Council's Sports, Arts, Culture and Community Services Committee meeting this week.

“The financial support the grants provide is vital to creative endeavour and cultural practice in regional Queensland,” Mayor Val Schier said.

“The funding allows professional and emerging artists to be engaged on projects that have wide reaching community benefits, lead to innovation and contribute to the fabric of our region.”

The successful applicants are:

• Babinda Information Centre (Contemporary Collection / Stories category) – Development of a portfolio of 25 in situ photographs of the interior of the Babinda Mill.
• Cairns and District Chinese Association (Building Community and Cultural Capacity) – Development of a Professional Development Workshop Program.
• Carol O’Riley (Contemporary Collection / Stories) – Publishing a collection of stories of profoundly deaf people.
• Cheryl Harrison (Regional Partnerships) – Production of a new body of artwork for a solo exhibition at the Cairns Regional Gallery.
• Julie Poulsen and Jenny Valmarde (Cultural Tourism) – Development of a short film by esteemed filmmaker Catherine Hunter.
• Julie McEnerny (Regional Partnerships) – Development of a residency program in partnership with Cairns Botanic Gardens and TANKS Arts Centre.
• Moondogs Gypsy Blues Band (Cultural Tourism) – Production of a CD and video clip.
• Charlotte Rose Biggs (Concept Development) – Development of a strategic plan and business case to establish an artist-run photographic centre based in Cairns.
• Sue Stitt (Building Community Capacity) – Development of a Professional Development Workshop Program as part of the inaugural Cairns Winter Music School.
