Ultimate battle - Crocs vs Lions

by Des Rolfe

Those spectators who turned up to the Croc Pit last Saturday were treated to a scintillating display of AFL football. Port Douglas Crocs and Cairns City Lions turned on a blinder.

The final scores in no way detracted from the highly skilled use of the ball by both teams and their refusal to give in. The game was a perfect example of why Australian Rules Football is the world's greatest sport.

Port Douglas Reserves continued on their winning way and proved far too good for their opponents on the day.  As Melinda Cox observed "Again the young kids moved the ball around well, with players such as Kayne Freyling, Victor Rhodes and especially Kerrod "Bully" Andrews who kicked 6 goals really shining.
Terrific too to see Matthew Gard play so well in his first game back with the club this season."

The Seniors match was played in brilliant sunshine with a gentle breeze blowing.  High marking, rapid fire play-on football, pin-point hand passing and accurate kicking for goal were major features.

For the first half, particularly, the pace was a cracker.  Crocs forwards Sammy Boxall and Relton Roberts were stand-outs because of their speed, accuracy and goal-kicking prowess.

The gutsy Kane Uebergang kept releasing the ball enabling our fleet of foot players such as Daniel Smith, Brenton Bading and Campbell Wurrumarba to sprint clear of the packs.

Billy McCartney made the comment that " he was particularly impressed by the flair of Relton Roberts, especially his great vision; and the leadership of Evan Buddha Hocking which was inspirational."

A fantastic day!

A great night was had by all at the Trivia night in the club rooms after the game.  Thank you to Coxy for M.C ing the event.  Interesting that the winning team was a young group of current Crocs players. This confirms what we already knew - that the club's team list has intellect as well as sporting ablitity - obviously the nation's future is in great hands!

Saturday's game is Away at Crathern Park against Centrals, so come on supporters let's all get down there and help keep the adrenaline flowing.
