RRR reaches major milestone

The infamous RRR (Rural, Rainforest & Reef) Mountain Bike Challenge will celebrate a milestone in 2011. Now in its 21st year the event’s growth has seen it attract a multitude of spin off events including world championships and world cup races.

This year organisers of the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival will include the endurance race into the program and are confident it will continue to flourish as it is exposed to a new market.

Rolling into its 21st year, the RRR cross country, endurance mountain bike race is the longest running 'point to point' race in Australia. With over 400 local, national and international entrants racing through North Queensland terrain every year, 2011 aims to increase entrant numbers and international exposure.

21 years ago in 1990, up and coming local Mountain Bike enthusiasts, Glen Jacobs and Peter Blakey, accidentally stumbled across one of the most unique and amazing ride destinations in the world.

This year the RRR begins at Mt Molloy and heads outback toward Wetherby Station through cattle country, crossing grids and passing through gates. After kilometres of dirt and dust, the intense hill climbs kick in at Bells Hill, testing endurance and stamina.

Crossing into deep tropical rainforest in Julatten, the riders are submerged in dense terrain before turning into the famous 'Bump Track', known for the fast, downhill section.

Dropping off the Great Dividing Range into the Mowbray Valley, the riders head out across cane paddocks racing their way to Port Douglas and the stunning Four Mile Beach.

The Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club finish line is in sight. In this visually spectacular race, three diverse terrains are dominated.

With two distances – 70km and 40km and categories that include elite, expert, sport, masters and social it truly offers everyone the chance to be part of this great adventure event.
