Member for Cook Jason O'Brien MP is calling on local sport and recreation clubs to be good sports and apply for equipment grants worth up to $2,000.

Mr O'Brien said the Bligh Government was encouraging more clubs to sign up to the 'Positive or it’s Pointless' campaign.

“The Positive or it’s Pointless campaign aims to change poor player and spectator behaviour at junior matches,” Mr O'Brien said.

“By building a positive culture at all the junior clubs, the campaign hopes to replace negative features such as player violence, abuse of referees and the ‘ugly parent’.

“Clubs who sign up to this initiative, and implement a Positive or it’s Pointless plan, may be eligible for sporting equipment grants of up to $2,000.

“This excellent program is helping to create a positive and fun environment that encourages people to participate in sport.”

Eligible clubs with less than 100 members can apply for a $500 grant, 100-200 members for $1,000, and clubs with more than 200 members can apply for $2,000 grants for sports equipment.

Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the campaign, which was first launched in 2009 to Brisbane junior football codes, aims to make sport safe for children and inspire those involved at the football grassroots level to adopt the principles of integrity, respect, fun, responsibility and excellence.

“Thanks to the success of Positive or its Pointless over the past two years, we will be introducing the campaign to other junior team sports across Queensland,” he said.

Four elite players from each football code have been selected as campaign ambassadors. They are Will Genia (rugby union), Shane Stefanutto (football), Luke Power (Australian rules) and Cameron Smith (rugby league).

“Each of these players is an ideal choice to spread the message that anyone who is involved in sport, regardless of age or ability, deserves to play in a fun, safe and fair environment that is free of harassment or discrimination,” Mr Reeves said.

“These players have a reputation for playing their sport in a way that is hard but fair, which are attributes that are admired by the whole community.

“Together, these four players present a united approach in promoting the Positive or it’s Pointless messages and serve as true role models to young sportsmen and women across Queensland.”
