Challenge Cairns course revealed

Organisers of the Cairns Airport Challenge Cairns have revealed the final course for 5 June that will see thousands of athletes, supporters and media descend on the region to contest the inaugural event, and also inject some much needed tourism funds into the area.

The world’s best iron distance athletes will do battle over many hours in the Challenge Cairns event, with the swim will taking place at Yorkeys Knob Boating Club, the cycle course winding its way along the majestic Captain Cook Highway to Port Douglas, and the run leg a three lap course taking in the Cairns boardwalk.

Cairns Regional Council Mayor Val Schier took the opportunity to acknowledge that there would be some extensive road closures involved that would impact on resident and business but implored the local community to embrace the event and get involved.

"I would encourage everyone to get involved in the event and help make this a truly world class event for the region,” Mayor Schier said.

Member for Cairns Desley Boyle said with $100,000 Euro in prize money this event was the second-richest triathlon in the world.

"I don't think locals have realised just yet how big and how special this event will be for Cairns and the region.

"I would hope that any minor inconvenience would be swept away by the excitement and opportunities this event will bring. This will be a real shot in the arm for our economy and builds on our reputation as a major destination for sports tourism."
