Running club finds its feet
46 runners took part in the Port Douglas Fun Run on Sunday in perfect conditions which saw a large contingent of Cairns runners take part in the event.
This was Port Douglas' inaugural Fun Run as a branch of the Cairns Road Runners and Triathlon Club, and locals were eager to sign up to become members of the expanded organisation.
"Being our first event it's something we have learnt a lot from, (we'll) use what we now know to make the next fun run even bigger and better," said race director Nick Carling.
"We really had no idea how many would show up on the day and for 50 people to show up, it was not only a great surprise but also shows that the interest is definitely there for a run club in Port."
The Port Douglas running club will commence social runs from 11 April at 6am from Julan Park where members and non-members can choose from a 3km ,5km or 7.5km run.
"It's a great chance to meet some new people and get fit doing so. There are so many events to look forward to throughout the year which gives runners something to work towards," Mr Carling said
One of these is the Great Barrier Reef Marathon Festival on 12 November 2011 which has received a number of registrations since the recent launch of the website.
People interested in joining the Port Douglas running club can sign up as a member for 2011 for $35 which entitles members to discounts on all Cairns Roadrunners and Port Douglas runners events.
