Cairns fest celebrating 50 years
In 2011 Cairns Festival will launch its 50th celebration of creativity, community, and cultural identity in the Far North.
Cairns Regional Council are working to build a team for this milestone season and are now inviting cultural producers to contribute to its 19 August to 4 September program.
"It's going to be a wonderful time to celebrate our region's creative people, and unique sense of place," said Mayor of Cairns Regional Council, Val Schier.
"We want this year’s event to be a true showcase of life in tropical Queensland and would love as many people as possible to take part in the season. Cairns Festival is now open to artists, organisations, and producers who would like to be part of the exciting 17-days,” she said.
Individuals, institutions and creative partners who would like to propose an event or activity are asked to submit their details online, from the Festival's website. The deadline for submissions is 15 April, 2011.
“Artistic process, cultural expression, creative partnerships—these have been the cornerstones of the past half-century in Tropical Queensland. During that time, Cairns has become the kind of place where ideas are nurtured, artists find space and time, creative people collaborate, and regional identity is explored,” said Cairns Festival producer, Eric Holowacz.
"Our community has been gifted with a diversity of creative influences, unique heritage aspects, and truly interesting people. As we all work together to build the most exciting festival in Australia, the Festival encourages artists, musicians, producers, and creative thinkers to join us in any way,” said Mr Holowacz.
