The sports wrap with Nicky G

by Nick Gibson

Bernard Tomic is the talk of the tennis world right now as he just booked a quarter finals birth at Wimbledon with Novak Djokovic.

Is it true that the Aussie tennis faithful have found a messiah to replace the dwindling LLeyton Hewitt? Maybe! One thing he has that LLeyton clearly lacks is size and Tomic is not shy in this department.

And let’s face it, if you wanna mix it with the big boys SIZE DOES MATTER!! Pound for pound Lleyton Hewitt will probably be our most successful player as I doubt anyone else his size or weight will be able to replicate his achievements.

He is similar, I guess, to Shane Heal in basketball terms who had an extraordinary career as a 6ft 2in pro baller who felt comfortable amongst the trees.

One thing these undersized men didn’t or don’t lack is heart or determination or proving people wrong who told them they were too short to make it!

Tomic on the other hand is on a more even playing field and being still only 18 the sky could be the limit! He has hired Pat Rafter into his camp (possibly our most humble champion) who is bouncing off Tomic senior quite nicely to help this young lads career take off.

His serve and power game can match it with Djokovic and let’s see how his maturity shapes up. An upset would be awesome!

The AFL clubs seem to have put themselves in divisions right now and are saying if you’re not Geelong, Hawthorn or Collingwood (boo) then you are no chance for a flag in 2011!

Carlton look a little shaky after dropping a home game to the much improved West Coast and that loss could have a huge impact on their top four chances.

North Melbourne, Melbourne and Essendon will all be sniffing around that last finals spot in three months and Gold Coast, Brisbane (boo hoo), and both Adelaide clubs are hard to watch, let alone take seriously!

Western Doggies and St Kilda are still unknown entities at this stage and we all know it’s only a matter of time before they click into gear. The Sainters just enjoyed the bye and it was great to see a few thawing out in Port Douglas.

Zac Dawson on Friday night seemed very amused by the form or lack their off in oversized cane toad ‘fat bastard’!

This weeks winners

Bernard Tomic – go get the Serb!
Geelong – still undefeated!
Hewitt – what a career for a pint sized athlete!
West Coast – first Melbourne scalp (against a top four side)
Kyrie Irving – as expected went No.1 to Cleveland! Please play for Australia!!

This weeks losers

Crows and Power – both coaches move on please!
Both Qld clubs – only Gold Coast have a youth excuse!
Carlton – Gotta win them ones and Juddy had a shocker against his former club!
