Thanks for the memories

by Mat Churchill

Holiday makers are being urged to not leave their brains at home when they pack their bags to head to Port Douglas for a well-earned break.

The 'Project Good Memories'program, developed by Port Douglas Police Officer Senior Constable Russell Jean, is being launched this week in an effort to reduce the incidence of theft in the town's resorts and beaches, and other issues tourist destinations encounter.

"The project was born out of last (high) season and our observations of what took place in Port Douglas and our surrounding area," Senior Constable Jean said.

"I went back (to the resorts) and found that people would leave their balcony doors open, leave their wetsuits and even their cameras out on their balcony.

"$20,000 worth of gear went missing last year. We were lucky, we recovered it, but hey, you wouldn't leave your doors open at home."

Senior Constable Jean will address the a group of resort representatives on Tuesday to garner support for the program in Port Douglas. Already Sheraton Mirage and Sea Temple have expressed their interest.

Tent cards and compendium information will be made availble in guest's rooms and contain five simple "Policing Tips" for patrons which include information on:

1. Drink and Drug Driving
2. Bikes and Scooter safety
3. Party Safe
4. Four Mile Beach (fires and drinking in public)
5. Valuables and Security

Senior Constable Jean said that a program such as 'Project Good Memories' can work anywhere.

"This is a program which can be transported anywhere in the world. It looks like the bosses might like to see something like this in Cairns.

"We want people to leave with good memories of Port Douglas," Senior Constable Jean said. "We don't want to see you other than to say 'G'day how are you going, we hope you're enjoying your stay'."
