Young Guns' firepower too much for Shooters

by Gemma Gwilliams

All teams came out fighting in last night's Douglas Netball Association and there were some big score lines by the end of competition.

Central Cougars 49 def Julatten Jewels 37

Even though both teams were missing valuable players this week, the game still reached a total score of 86 goals, a very high score showing that both teams were very evenly matched and gave it their all.

The Jewels played a great game but trailed in each quarter resulting in the final score margin of 12. Cas Cairns and Kerryn Bohm from the Central Cougars were awarded the best and fairest players of the game. After their win the Cougars maintain their top and undefeated position.

Young Guns 51 def Sugarland Shooters 6

In one of the biggest score differences of the season, the second placed Young Guns came out with fire and skill to dominate the Shooters.

For three quarters the Guns managed to get at least 10 goals more than Sugarland each time.  The Shooters simply didn’t get enough opportunities at goals due to the incredible defence by Guns Chenoa Ryan and Caroline Miller. For their great efforts they were both awarded the best and fairest of the game.

Rattle N Hum 42 def Blood Orange 14

In another game of dominance, Rattle managed a very convincing win over the undermanned Blood Orange side. Both teams' defence were extremely tight but while Blood Orange did not have a wing defence, Rattle picked up every opportunity that was available.

Blood Orange shooter, Sarah McConnell was awarded the games best and fairest player. After Rattle's win they are still tied for second position with the Young Guns team.

Crocs 24 def Pink Panthers 18

Crocs started off strongly and were ahead by six goals by half time, however the Panthers stayed strong and did not give up. They played hard in the third to win by one goal however Crocs hard work at the start allowed them to take the game by just six goals.

Best and fairest were awarded to Crocs players, Jodi Francis and Miranda Clark.

Jets 22 def Bad Habitats 6

The top placed Jets in the B grade division hold their position this week with a comfortable win over the Bad Habitats. The young and talented team managed to beat the Bad Habitats in every quarter to win the game by 16 goals.

Although they lost, the Habitats still played a good game and improved their goals each quarter. The best and fairest was awarded to Jets' wing attack, Hazuki Kirby.

U-14 Rep Team 29 def Breakers 4

This week the players of the U-14 Douglas Representative team once again proved that they deserve their positions on the squad. Breakers were unable to get any goals in two quarters of the game giving the Rep team a win of 25 goals.

An amazing effort by the young girls saw their goal attack, Marly Cairns, receive the best and fairest along with Breakers player, Lauren Ryan.

Special congratulations to Crocs player Jodi Francis who has won this week’s player of the round! Jodi played an outstanding game in defence this week and has won herself one night’s accommodation at the Mt. Carbine Hotel Motel.
