Perfect 10 for White

  • White kicks 10 in Crocs victory
  • Captain dominates
  • Reserves remain undefeated

by Des Rolfe

The game started in cold, blustery conditions with Port Douglas kicking with the wind, however their first two goals were quickly answered by North Cairns.

To their credit Port Douglas pressed forward and kicked accurately for goal, putting on five straight.  Full forward Matt Shaw was prominent early taking two telling marks and booting three goals.

Luke "Doggy " Bloom was defending well and Tim Karpeny, back after a month's break, was nippy around the packs.  Mitch Nicholson was using crisp handballing, and Daniel Smith was at his brilliant best.

The second quarter opened with a great goal by Campbell Wurramarrba.  North Cairns closed the game up and levelled the scores, and Port Douglas' pace seemed a little suspect with some indecisive efforts taking the gloss off their play.

But a lift in their endeavour saw a real change come over the game.  The Crocs sneaked out to a six goal lead with Bloom contining to play well.  Evan "Buddha" screamed downfield and kicked two ripper goals.

During the long break coach Andy Viola must have insisted that the Crocs' players don their superhero capes.  They came out of the blocks in the third quarter faster than a speeding bullet and leapt North Cairns players in a single bound.

The ball was steam-rolled forward with astonishing frequency.  Every Port Douglas player lifted, led by the inimitable Hocking who was again at his dynamic best.  Justin "Snow" White was turning in an absolute blinder, and kicked his eighth opportunistic goal for the match.

As experienced play watcher Greg Nicholson said "Matt Shaw, Craig Shaw and Sammy Boxall have all covered the opposition which has freed up Snow White to score at will."

Smithy was indefatiguable while Campbell and Timmy were still prominent.  Snow White capped off a magic day with ten goals as the Crocs finished the match full of running and realised a huge victory.

Terrific to see Port Douglas Reserves continuing their winning form.  Saturday saw them chalk up another sensational win.  Well done!
