HMB Endeavour to visit region
A piece of history will sale into Cairns this month, with the arrival of the HMB Endeavour replica.
The Australian-built, full-scale replica gives an insight into the conditions in which Captain James Cook and his crew lived while at sea.
“The vessel is considered to be one of the world’s most accurate maritime reproductions,” Acting Mayor Margaret Cochrane said.
“It gives people the opportunity to see what life was like back in the late 1700s, when these were unchartered waters.”
The replica ship will sail into Cairns on 22 June as it circumnavigates Australia, stopping at 18 ports.
Volunteers are sought to act as on-board guides when the vessel is opened up to the public daily from 24 June to 5 July.
The floating museum will be open daily from 10am to 5pm, with last boarding at 4pm. School groups will take priority between 10am and 1pm on school days.
Anyone wishing to volunteer as a guide during the ship’s visit is asked to contact Trish Pascuzzo on (02) 9298 3772 or email tpascuzzo@anmm.gov.au.
No maritime or guiding experience is necessary and full training will be provided for volunteers.
