Eco-librium - Mystery on the high seas

You never know what you’re going to find when you head out to the beach, sometimes the items are easy to identify, but every now and then something washes up on the beach that we need to use a bit of detective work to find out exactly what it is or where it came from.

Here are some of our latest “mystery items”, and any insight into their origins would be much appreciated!

Top left – was found drifting in the shipping channel on the way out to the Agincourt Reef from Port Douglas.

Bottom left – this item was found at Mission Beach after cyclone Yasi passed through.

We will reveal the identities of these “mystery items” next month but we're happy to hear your thoughts so comment below.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to invite all volunteers to our next beach clean up event! To be held on 11 and 12 June in celebrations of World Environment and World Ocean Days, Tangaroa Blue and the Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas will be holding a weekend of activities to celebrate the unique environment in which we live.

Cooya Beach will be the venue for a beach clean up event on Saturday 11 June.

Volunteers can meet at Cooya Beach at 9.30am or for those who would like to carpool from Port Douglas, volunteers can meet at the Wildlife Habitat at 9am.

The beach clean up will run from 9.30am to 12pm and all clean up materials will be provided. Volunteers will need to bring drinking water, sunscreen, shoes and lots of energy!

On Sunday 12 June an education day will be held at the Wildlife Habitat, Port Douglas and all beach clean up volunteers will receive a voucher giving them entry and Breakfast With The Birds for just $5 for that day!
