Cougars claw their way to victory

by Gemma Gwilliams

This week the undefeated Cougars almost lost their first game of the season to the second placed Young Guns. The Guns came out on court and showed a great display of skill and speed leaving the Cougars trailing by four goals for three quarters.

The Cougars team tried a variety of combinations with their players but the Guns stood their ground in their respective positions and outplayed the top team.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the central team tightened their game and their passes, that they were able to come from four behind and take the game by three goals.

An amazing effort from the Guns' defence, Chenoa Ryan, and great centre play by Cougars player, Danielle Bellero, saw both these players receive the best and fairest award for the game.

The loss for the Young Guns means they move down to third position and Central Cougars stay in the top spot.

Another very tight game this week saw the Crocs and Shooters tied on 24 goals at the end of the third quarter. Both teams played great games but in the fourth quarter Sugarland Shooters simply were not given enough opportunities at goal meaning they lost by four goals.

The Crocs put in a very good game considering they were one player down and Shooters' defence was also very skilled in preventing a large number of goals.

Crocs goal shooter, Emma Kate Lovell, and Shooters goal keeper Bec Pont, received the best and fairest player’s award for the game.

In a very physical game the second placed Rattle were calm and controlled throughout the game resulting in an 18 goal win against the Pink Panthers.

There were many loose balls and contacts called but overall the experience of the Rattle team came through. Rattle N Hums shooter, Aimee Watson, was awarded best and fairest player of the game along with Panthers' goal defence, Megan Payne.

Yet another tight game saw the Bad Habitats only trailing by four goals in the third quarter. It was the fourth quarter that the young Jets stole the show and won the quarter 9 goals to 2.

Habitats' goal attack, Hayley Gwynne, did the best she could with the opportunities she was given and for that was awarded the best and fairest player of the game. This was also shared with Jets' shooter, Jade Harold, who also had a great game in the goal circle.

The U-14 Rep Team's hard training and skill was once again on display against the Breakers side. Early in the game teams were tied on four goals, however by the end of the third quarter the Rep team were ahead by ten goals.

This didn’t give the Breakers much time to come back and resulted in a 12 goal win to the representative side. Best and fairest player was awarded to the Rep teams' goal defence for her great work in the centre circle.

A special congratulations to Sugarland Shooters player Bec Pont who has won this week's player of the round! Bec played an outstanding game in defence this weekand has won herself one night’s accommodation at the Mt. Carbine Hotel Motel.
