The sports wrap with Nicky G

by Nick Gibson

Wimbledon was no joke this year as the 'Joker' himself won his first slam on grass, notched his 43rd win from 44 starts this year and had the No.1 seed in the bag before the game had even begun!

It will be remembered as possibly the only Grand Slam final ever where the No.1 seed played the No.1 ranked player!

You've gotta hand it to this Serbian however as he has managed to shine through in a time where men's tennis is as tough and competitive as hell - even the immortal Federer can't break into the semi's these days.

Djokovic is doing to Nadal what Nadal did to Federer - stopping him dead in his tracks! If it wasn't for Nadal, Federer might have more than 25 grand slams in his lunch box which would be a record that would probably have stood the test of time.

We'll never know! Now, thanks to the Joker, Nadal (10 Slams) may never catch Fererer (16 Slams) or even Sampras (14). Between the three of them no one else seems to stand a chance and I feel Britain could be waiting another 70 years to have a Pommy claim Wimbledon.

This will give a normally positive nation something to whinge about...

In footy action Collingwood seemed to further raise the bar on the rest of the competition but I’m not too worried yet. Although they are a well coached, talented and deep I still believe they are beatable when someone else is injury free or running hot!

Hawthorn were nowhere near full strength on Sunday and paid the price with an old fashioned ass whooping. Geelong were also brought back to earth with a lesson from their former coach but St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs are starting to make their run.

It was a round of upsets which is proved by the fact my wife out-tipped me and she knows bugger all about the game! Maybe I’ll get her to do my weekly tips as they couldn’t get any worse!

Wednesday night is a must see as the Maroons take on the Blues in Darren Lockyer’s last game for his state.

I’m not a huge Rugby dude but I do like watching the greats play in the emotional State of Origins as for some reason the cream always rises to the top.

I’m tipping Queensland in a fiery encounter and Lockyer to have a pearler!

Next week we’ll dissect Origin 3, the AFL and whatever else is making news in sport.

This weeks winners

Brissy Lions – most of the squad had forgotten the words to the song!
Djokovic – All class in a strong field!
Carlton – 100 point winners over Richmond is a statement!
W Dogs – Don’t write them off!
Essendon – I’d hate to play poker against James Hird as he’s a very cool customer in all situations!
Petra Kvitova – Beats Sharapova for the Wimbledon title but not the ‘best legs’ title!

This weeks Losers

Port Adelaide – most of the squad have never sung the song!
Richmond – Hardwick did after the game what most supporters have been doing for years – CRIED!!
Nadal – If you knock off the Brit you’ve gotta go all the way – or leave him in!
Geelong – What goes up must eventually come down!
Nameless punter – It was reported on facebook (must be true) a punter backed Geelong for a cool $1 million on Saturday night. DOH!!
NBA – The owners and players can’t reach an agreement so a lockout is inevitable. Too much money and too many egos – Disgraceful!
