Mackerel shootout this weekend

The mackerel will be hoping for a big blow on Saturday, considering the local interest attempting to claim a scalp or two of these super sports fish.

If the weather is even half-decent, dozens of locals will be out on the water trying to bag the biggest Spanish mackerel and the $1000 cash and $3000 worth of prizes in the inaugural Port Douglas Mackerel Shoot-out.

In keeping with the Port Douglas Fishing Club’s “keep it simple” philosophy, there will only be one category, one day’s fishing, one fish weighed per angler, and one winner taking the majority of the prize pool including the cash.

“We’ve simplified the rules as much as possible,” tournament organiser Lynton Heffer (locally known as Heff) said.

“We want to get as many people as possible involved, and have a bit of fun.

“Of course, once the fishing starts, there will be some people who are deadly serious, but it is an event designed where the average ‘Joe’ and the professional are on even footing, anyone can win it.

“Come along, sign up, pay your $25 bucks and bring some of that seaside village enthusiasm we are famous for.

“It’ll be a great opportunity to stitch up the prestigious bragging rights for a year, as well as winning some awesome prizes.”

If you’re keen on being part of the spoils in prizes and $1000 in cash, you can call Heff on 0409 610 869.

The compulsory competition registration and briefing takes place Friday at the Hog’s Breath Café between 5pm and 6pm.

If the Bureau of Meteorology forecast for Saturday indicates winds over 20kts, the competition will be postponed.
