Mackerel escape anglers’ wrath…for now

By Kerry Larsen

A strong wind warning and high seas forced organisers of Saturday’s inaugural Port Douglas Mackerel Shootout to postpone the event until next month.

Following on from last year’s highly successful Marlin Challenge, entrants to the Mackerel Shootout are to vie for a purse of $1000 for the biggest Spanish mackerel and $3000 worth of other prizes.

Organiser, Lynton Heffer, said the call to postpone the event was made at 5.30am on Saturday morning, with a strong wind warning valid for North Coast Waters between Cooktown and Cardwell with winds forecast up 30 knots.

According to Heff, 55 anglers had registered for last Saturday’s event, and believes up to 150 anglers could be in the running for the prizes on Sunday, August 7, when the event is rescheduled.

Those interested in registering can do so on Friday, August 5, between 5pm and 6pm, at Hog’s Breath Café on the boardwalk at Meridien Marina.
