UPDATE: 2011 Carnivale parade to be moved?

UPDATE 08.30am : Tues, 18 Jan 2011.

The response to date by The Newsport Daily readers regarding the potential move of the 2011 Carnivale Street Parade has been swift and decisive.

At the time of writing over 120 people have had their say via The Newsport Daily poll, with around 77% of pollsters keen to see the parade remain in Macrossan Street while 23% would be happy to see it moved to Wharf Street.

"We'll hope to make a decision later this week," said Carnivale organiser and president of the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Ken Dobbs on the route of this year's parade.

Feedback is being sought on the popularity of an alternative route due to safety concerns held by some who say the parade has outgrown Macrossan Street. Some retailers have also indicated that the parade has a detrimental impact on business due to the closure of Macrossan Street to traffic on the day of the parade.

But it's not too late to have your say. The poll remains open, and any suggestions, ideas, or musings can be made by adding a comment. You can also read other people's comments on the original article '2011 Carnivale Street Parade to be moved?' below.

All results and comments will be given to Carnivale organisers to help shape the future of the event.

Carnivale's biggest attraction, the Macrossan Street Parade, has been thrust into the spotlight as Carnivale organisers seek your feedback to shape the future of the event.

The parade's popularity has thrown into question the safety of onlookers if the route were to be kept in Macrossan Street, and Wharf Street has been raised as a possible alternative.

With thousands of people lining Macrossan Street, and the parade's floats becoming larger by the year, space between the vehicles and onlookers is getting squeezed and there are fears that an accident is waiting to happen.

Event organiser Martine Cotton said Macrossan Street retailers have also raised concerns about the impact of trading hours on the day of the parade due to the street's closure on the day of the event.

Wharf Street's wider road with no centre obstructions is the obvious alternative, however Carnivale organisers would like you to express your opinion via The Newsport Daily poll and comments section.

The theme for the 2011 Carnivale Street Parade will be 'Douglas Wonderland'.
