All State, Catholic and Independent schools that were forced to close due to Cyclone Yasi reopened yesterday.

Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson said it was a smooth return to the classroom for students at schools affected by the cyclone.

"Returning to school is a big step towards life getting back to normal for students after the cyclone," Mr Wilson said.

"On Friday, 11 schools were still closed, down from around 350 the day before Cyclone Yasi hit. Safety checks have been carried out at all schools impacted by the cyclone and essential services have been restored.

"I know parents, teachers and students would welcome the return to the classroom after such a traumatic event. I'm pleased to report it has been a positive day with no major issues reported.

Many schools in the region were damaged, strewn with fallen trees and other debris or lost essential services such as electricity in the cyclone.

"I'd like to thank school staff, parents, P&C and P&F groups, students, emergency services, volunteers, the Queensland Catholic Education Commission, Independent Schools Queensland, QBuild and the Department of Education and Training for their efforts to get schools back up and running.

"Schools are the heart and soul of our communities and after the cyclone, we saw school communities come together to ensure students could continue on their learning journey as soon as possible," Mr Wilson said.
