Rate relief for region

Cairns Regional Council is offering those ratepayers facing financial difficulties a number of options to assist with the payment of their half yearly Council rates.

CEO Lyn Russell said delivery of Council’s half yearly rates, issued on January 28, was interrupted by Cyclone Yasi and those ratepayers who have not received their notice should contact Council as soon as possible to obtain a copy.

“Council is well aware that the last year has been economically difficult and the effects of Cyclone Yasi have been severe for some ratepayers,” the CEO said.

“We encourage those residents who are struggling to pay their rates to contact Council as soon as possible.  Staff can help work out a payment plan to suit individual circumstances.”

Rates can be paid quickly and conveniently online at Council’s website or in a number of alternative methods, which include credit card by telephone and internet and Bpay.  Over the counter payments can be made by cheque or cash at Council Customer Service Centres and Post Offices.

“Visiting Council’s website to pay rates offers customers the opportunity to keep up to the minute with Council activities and services on offer,” Ms Russell said.

Council also provides direct debit plans. Rates can be paid from bank accounts by way of weekly, fortnightly or monthly payments in advance, leaving minimal or no amount to pay before the rates due date on February 28.
