10:30am, 1st February 2011 COOKTOWN

Members of the Cook Shire Local Disaster Management Group met today to receive the latest information from the Bureau of Meteorology and to discuss what action will be taken in preparation for the potential affects from Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi.

Cook Shire Mayor and chair of the LDMG Cr Peter Scott said “We are urging the Cook Shire community to make final preparations for Cyclone Yasi as it will start to affect the North Queensland coast early Wednesday morning.”

Key messages from the LDMG:

  • People living in coastal and low lying areas should already consider taking action to protect properties against a potential storm surge and have a back-up plan in place to go to friends or relatives. At present there is NO evacuation centre for Cook Shire;
  • The community should complete preparations to safeguard homes and personal safety.
  • Emergency kits and plans should be ready now and residents should continue to listen to further advice in the media;
  • Builders are urged to secure machinery and equipment on building sites in the area and businesses are advised to secure loose materials;
  • The Cook Shire LDMG will meet regularly to cover preparations, and receive updated information on Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi which will be disseminated to the community.

Cyclone Yasi is still situated a long way off our coast but it is moving fast as a huge, intense system and residents should already be taking full precautions.

For more information on the cyclone and advice for preparations visit the Council’s website or Facebook page (search Cook Shire Connect). Notices will also be displayed at prominent locations around the townships of Cook Shire.
