Slogfest from Junior Muddies

by Noel Twomey

A series of 24 hour stomach bugs and prior commitments saw only a determined half dozen Muddies take up the challenge against the Atherton Wild Hogs in 30 plus degree heat at Tolga on Saturday.

The Under 12 Douglas Muddies were kindly supplemented by four of the Hogs' top players in a friendly end of year Christmas 20/20 match, complete with Santa hats and multi coloured broad shorts, a colourful backdrop against a sea of white.

Taking to the field, the Muddies started well with a wicket falling on the second ball of the innings by the brilliant bowling of Hugo Walker who finished the day with the best bowling figures of 3 for 4.

He was supported by other tight bowling from Ryan Doble (2 for 5), Tully Cartwright (1 for 7), Luke Twomey (1 for 9) and Aston Devonport (1 for 17).

The Muddies showed an improvement in the field by backing each other up and showing positive encouragement and communication with each other.

Luke displayed some good glove work as wicketkeeper with two catches, and Tully managed a superb catch at Point. This kept the charging Hogs to a respectable innings total.

The Muddies responded with a display of power hitting by Tully Cartwright, scoring 23 runs off 16 balls. He was closely supported by Hugo Walker with 16 off 10 balls, and Reuben Allison 6 off 10.
Together, with the combined hitting power of the four on loan players, the Muddies scored a comfortable win.
