Council rate rise rumours quashed
Rumours that a 13 per cent rate rise was voted in by Cairns Regional Council behind closed doors this week have been quashed by Division 10 councillor, Julia Leu.
It is believed that the rumours may have been fuelled following the successful vote by Council to move forward on the Cairns Entertainment Precinct on Wednesday.
Ms Leu emphatically denied the rumours after The Newsport readers and ratepayers raised their concerns over the rumour.
“There are a lot of ill-informed, inaccurate comments going around town at the moment,” Mr Leu told The Newsport.
“There is no basis to these rumours at all, we are not quite half way through the financial year yet and our rates have been set for next year.
“Our financial model clearly sets out what needs to be covered, and under the Local Government Act, that is what Council has to adhere to.”
