Cairns' $100m government windfall
Mayor of the Cairns Regional Council, Val Schier, has welcomed a $57.3 million commitment by the State Government to the Cairns Entertainment Precinct.
The money comes on top of a $40 million commitment from the Federal Government to build an entertainment venue on the banks of Trinity Inlet at the southern end of the Cairns CBD.
Cr Schier joined Premier Anna Bligh at the site of the planned development for the official announcement of the State’s contribution.
“For the Premier to come to Cairns to announce this significant funding package demonstrates the State Government’s confidence in the future of this region,” Cr Schier said.
“This is funding that is intended to boost the Cairns region’s economy through job stimulation and ongoing benefits.
“We now have almost $100 million in government cash for the Cairns Entertainment Precinct.
“In addition, the State Government has provided the land on which to build the Precinct at a peppercorn rent," she said.
“This is an unprecedented showing of support for the Cairns region – we have received everything we have asked for."
