Young Guns put scare in Cougar camp

In the big game of the night the Young Guns showed the Central Cougars that they will have to keep working hard if they want to maintain their undefeated, top position.

By the end of the first half the young side were ahead of the Central Cougars by two goals in a great display of defence by their whole team. The Cougars did not start of as well as they had hoped, missing valuable opportunities and giving away the ball due to unnecessary mistakes.

By the end of the third quarter, however, the Cougars had worked hard and turned the table to take the two goal advantage. The Young Guns held on with great shooting by Charlotte Turvey but Danni Bellero kept her team together through the mid court to take the game 33 – 25.

Charlotte and Danni both received the best and fairest player awards for their outstanding games.

In the second A-grade game of the night the fourth placed Blood Orange took on the second placed Rattle N Hum.

Blood Orange did not get off to a good start and it cost them valuable points ending the first half 13 – 5. Things changed in the second half however as they were able to match the goals scored in the third and fourth.

Rebecca Nelson played a great game for Orange in shooter and her defence, Adrianna Van Boxtal, from Rattle played equally as well.

It was great to see the toughm, yet skilled, competition between the two players and they were both awarded the best and fairest players of the game.

The final score was 28 – 18 to Rattle N Hum.

In the A-reserve division the Sugarland Shooters went down to the Julatten Jewels.

The Shooters played one player down and the Jewels put on a great display of skill and determination to prove they are still in the competition.

These factors along with the Shooters missing their star shooter meant a very bad combination for the Sugarland side. Jewels shooter, Rhiannon Schreiber, played a key role game and was awarded the best and fairest player along with the Shooters defender, Melinda Ketu.

The final score was 50 – 10 to the Julatten Jewels.

In the second game yet another team was disadvantaged due to not having enough players. The Crocs team took on the Pink Panthers with only five players but still hung in the game.

Early in the game they lost yet another player to injury but received some help and moved on with the game. Great shooting from the Panthers saw them leading throughout the whole game resulting in a 21 – 13 win over the Crocs.

Panthers player Chaz Clark was yet again awarded best and fairest along with Crocs defence, Jodi Francis.

In B-grade there was another close game with U-14 Rep team taking on the Bad Habitats.

The Bad Habitats were leading the game right up until the very last quarter where the Rep Team were able to take the game by three goals.

Bad Habitats shooter, Hayley Gwynne, was awarded the games best and fairest along with Brydie from the Rep Team. The final score was 17 – 14

In the second B-grade game of the night the Breakers took on the top placed Jets. By half time the score was tied at eight goals each however the Breakers lost it all in the third quarter.

The Jets were able to score 11 goals compared to the Breakers only managing to get one ball through the hoop. They fought back however in the fourth quarter but it simply wasn’t enough to catch the top team.

Breakers Centre, Jessica Steley, and Jets shooter, Natalie Littler, were awarded the best and fairest players. The final score was 24 – 13 to the Jets.
