Raiders looking good for the finals
The Douglas Reef Raiders look to have secured a spot in the Cairns and District Rugby Union finals after demolishing Innisfail 38-0 at the weekend.
Adam Calcraft continued to lead the scoring effort for the Raiders up forward, scoring three tries, while five-eighth Simon Chick and prop Clint Kachel played crucial roles in the 2008 premiers’ 38 point win.
The bonus-point win puts the Raiders into third spot on the CDRU ladder, five points clear of league heavy-weights, Brothers.
This weekend’s last round of regular fixtures will see the Raiders travel to Smithfield to take on the second-placed, reigning premiers JCU Mariners – a must-win game to ensure their tilt at the 2011 premiership.
Brothers will be relying on the Raiders to lose to the Mariners, and Brothers need to score a big, bonus-point win over league-leaders Southside to try and knock the Raiders out of the finals race.
However, the Raiders possess the superior head-to-head record of all CDRU teams against Mariners this season, after securing a win in April and a draw in June.
Apart from waiting on the return of key players Jared Dunstan and Shane Branch, the Raiders have also demonstrated superior fitness this season and will be looking to use that advantage to over-run JCU.
JCU take on the Raiders 3.30pm this Saturday.
