Police bites

A Port Douglas man has pleaded guilty to hacking into the files of a local business.

Steven Bradford, 38, appeared at Mossman Magistrates Court last week after Mossman detectives investigated a complaint from the business and established that, between the months of April and June, the company computer had been hacked into using the internet.

"Confidential information was accessed. Nothing was stolen or altered or damaged," Detective Sergeant and Officer In Charge at Mossman CIB, Trevor Perham said.

Mr Bradford received a $300 fine and no conviction was recorded (it was previously reported that Mr Bradford had received a period of probation. This information given to The Newsport was incorrect).

Detective Sergeant Perham warned people to remain vigilant with their online security.

"Technology is in the home, we use computers and phones for everything and it's worthwhile protecting your passwords and keeping your computer security up to date."

Port Douglas Police are urging women to be cautious when bathing on Four Mile Beach alone, following the recent reported sighting of a flasher.

According to Port Douglas Police Officer in Charge, Sergeant Damien Meadows, a Caucasian man in his 30s, with brown hair and 175cm tall, approached a woman at the southern end of Four Mile Beach on July 21, sometime between noon and 1pm.

The man allegedly spied on the woman for a number of minutes, before exposing himself when the woman approached him.

“This guy was brazen, he continued to expose himself even after she confronted him and that is concerning,” he said.

Sergeant Meadows said women and girls needed to be wary of bathing alone on the beach, and advised them to stay close to other people and take some form of ID in case something happened.

“Even if you have a mobile phone with a camera, take a photo so the police can try to catch the offender,” he said.

Sergeant Meadows said flashers were not new to town, with reportings seeming to escalate during the tourist season.

“If anyone sees an offender, please contact the police immediately,” he said.
