Men's Shed gets tongues wagging

Men in the Douglas region will soon have a place to surround themselves with power tools, have a cuppa, and generally hang out with like-minded blokes all in the name of good health with the establishment of the Men's Shed in Mossman.

Men's Sheds have sprung up all over Australia, and are designed to provide a place where guys can relax, feel comfortable, and do something constructive to help them deal with lifes problems and stresses in a healthy way.

"There's really nothing in the area for men," said Mossman Community Centre counsellor, Michelle Philp.

"I really believe it will be great for our community to help with retired men, or men who aren't working to get them connected again.

"The idea is to hopefully, once they're comfortable with the Men's Shed concept, is actually start mentoring youth at risk.

"My big plan would be to have one day a week where it's for the men. They do their own projects, or they do stuff the community needs, or they might make wooden toys for the kids at the hospital.

"Then some of those men, another day of the week, would mentor some youth at risk," she said.

Ms Philp said the community's youth would alsp benefit from the use of the Men's Shed.

"We have a youth centre here in Mossman which is part of our organisation (Mossman Community Centre). They went on a camp, mainly indigenous kids, and alot of the guys collected some wood and they're going to use our Men's Shed to create their own didgeridoo.

"So this is what the Men's Shed can do for our area, it's amazing."

Community volunteers, Lend Lease staff and Ms Philp are currently establishing the Men's Shed by building work benches and collecting tools.

The grand opening of the Men's Shed will be on 1 September at 10.30 am, and Ms Philp has put the call out to the Douglas region's male population.

"I'm hoping to get men here where they tell us what they want.

"They don't want women bossing them around, they have that enough at home, I want them to do it themselves. My role is as the counsellor.

"I want them to own this shed. I want them to have a say in everything."
