Junior Crocs save best til last

by Kylie Cox

Under 8s

Sunday saw the Under 8 Crocs take on Cairns South Green in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.  Although down in player numbers, the Crocs overpowered the Cutters with skill and determination to eventually dominate the game in every aspect.

Great defence and fast clean delivery from the centre to the forward line gave the forwards every possible chance to capitalise.

Geneva Gilbert’s long clearance kicks, new player Sammy Wall’s terrific marks and Jake Sherwell ‘s and Harry Walker’s non stop efforts were but a few of the highlights in a very exciting game.

The forwards in turn did a marvellous job with accurate kicking resulting in goals to Harry Walker (2), Geneva Gilbert (2) and Daniel Harrington (1).

As the game progressed  the Croc’s produced some of the best football they have played this year. Excellent team play gave each player added confidence which in turn heightened new found enthusiasm from all players.

Fill in coach, Matthew Scott, was very happy with the team’s performance and reminded the players that playing as a team and sharing the ball around gets results.

Player of the Day Medal was awarded to Harry Walker and the Macca’s Awards went to Jae Mitchell and Cameron Nyko.

Under 10s

At the Under 10 Crocs' last home game for the year on Sunday the team came up against a bigger Hawks side. In the first quarter our backline players had there work cut out for them with Reuben, Jack, Anthony and Rory fighting hard to restrict the Hawks scoring.

With the crocs midfield Daniel, Toby, Ryan and Jacob starting to get more ball out of the centre in the second half, the Crocs where able to give their forwards Leon, Dylan, Casey and Tyson more chances to score.

All the boys put in a great effort in front of their home crowd. With goal kickers Jacob Rich 1and Rory Nyko 1.

Awards went to Toby Ellison club medal, Daniel Davidson Reuben Allison and Jack Harrington. The boys now have three weeks of finals to finish the year.

Under 14s

Port Douglas Crocs hosted Cairns Hawks at the Croc Pit and the boys from Port Douglas were keen to wrap up their season with a win, particularly against the Hawks who had soundly defeated the Crocs at Cazaly’s on the previous Friday night.

The Crocs put in a huge effort in blustery conditions and were able to establish a slim lead going into the half-time break.

After a few settling words of encouragement from coach, Pat Barnett, the Crocs returned to the field fired-up and ready to consolidate their lead.

A goal-kicking frenzy led by Mitch Bohm saw the Crocs edge further ahead of their opponents and ultimately secure a hard-fought and well-deserved victory. In a fitting end to a difficult season, the Under 14 Crocs once again earned the right to sing the club song.

Goal kickers for the match were Mitchell Bohm (6), Dylan Davies, Patrick Lanskey, Josh McCauley, Zach McCauley and Tyron Orwin.

Ethan McCullough received The Beach Shack award while Mitchell Bohm, Loui Ganaia and Ashley Davidson each received an E.J.’s Takeaway voucher. Other award recipients were Guy Phongsunthorn, Harrison Brown and Dylan Davies who were rewarded with a McDonald’s meal vouchers for their efforts.

Port Douglas 11-9-75 def Cairns Hawks 8-4-52.

Thanks to those volunteers who have assisted with various match duties throughout the season – your help is very much appreciated.
