Gymnasts excel at home town comp

The Mossman & District Gymnastics Club sprang into action on Sunday, July 31, as it conducted its first ever, combined Circuit Challenge and Gold, Silver, Bronze competition.

The club also promoted the event as an Invitational and were delighted at having a small group of boys from the Cairns PCYC joining in with the fun.

Around 100 boy and girl competitors took part in the day’s events, which involved a low pressure circuit challenge for the younger beginner and intermediate gymnasts, followed by a full-on, professional-style competition for the more advanced gymnasts, ready for a challenge.

Head coach, Sonja  Zettl, explained “There were about 20 different activities to try, over two circuits, in the morning session.  For the Gold, Silver, Bronze competition in the afternoon, gymnasts had to perform separate routines on each piece of apparatus and were given an evaluation between 1 and 5 for each routine, resulting in either a gold, silver or bronze award according to their tallied scores.”

Each child who participated in both events took home a trophy and certificate. They were also well catered for by the gym club committee, who put on a delicious sausage sizzle, with an abundant supply of food thanks to Woolworths and the Mossman Butchery Company.

The gym club were also in a celebratory mood with fourteen new pieces of grant funded equipment arriving just before the competition.

Grant co-ordinator Erin Frizelle said “It was great to see the gym so well set up for the kids and exciting to see the new equipment being utilised so effectively and reaching competition standards."

Head coach, Sonja Zettl was pleased with the event.

“I want to thank all the junior and senior coaches who did a great job, and the committee who helped organise everything, making sure all the kids had a great day."
