Enterprise shares the wealth

14 community groups and charitable organisations were recipients of over $5,000 at the Mossman Bowls Club on Thursday night, thanks to the Cairns Community Enterprise.

An initiative of Bendigo Bank, the Cairns Community Enterprise delivers an ongoing income stream to not-for-profit groups without the need to submit grant applications.

"The (Bendigo Bank) customers can nominate a group that they wish to be the recipient of an income from the bank, and we share some of the income we make out of doing business with that customer back with that group or club," Port Douglas Bendigo Bank Branch Manager, Philip Davey said.

"This year it will be about $100,000. We've only been going for about 18 months and it's just sky rocketing."

Mr Davey said the initiative helps shoulder the burden of vital fundraising which often falls to a small, but dedicated group of members within an organisation.

"It's the same old people who are doing all the fundraising, it's the same old people who are putting their hands in their pockets, this is a way to take a bit of the pressure off so it's not always the same people doing all the hard work," he said.

Marguerite Cordell, Secretary of Paws and Claws, accepted a cheque for $439 thanks to the Bendigo Bank customers who nominated the animal shelter as their preferred recipient.

"It'll go straight to the dogs and cats in care. Obviously we have a lot of vet bills and food of course is always needed...that money is well spent," she said.

"It costs absolutely nothing from the person who sets up an account, and it's great."
