Dragons punching above their weight!
Eurotech Douglas Dragon Under 9's played Comets in Cairns on Saturday and made short work of their opponents.
Fast attacking play ensured a comfortable 7-0 win. Three goals from Jake Read, three from Jack Jenkins and one from Jack Carr saw the Dragons home.
The boys then backed up on Sunday playing a four game Under 10 Carnival at Marlin Coast. the young Dragons playing up a year with 9-a-side instead of 7 on bigger pitches tested the boys on a hot windy day.
Their first opponents were an Innisfail Rep team who were bigger and more experienced. The young Dragons held their own battling for every ball they lost to a narrow 2-1 scoreline, Jake Read scoring the only goal.
Next up was TAS - the Dragons started poorly and were punished with a 5-0 loss, Charlie Dowling done his best to drive the team on but they were soundly beaten in their worst performance of the season. In the next game Douglas played a physical dirty Marlin Coast side who did their best to kick the boys all over the park.
The Dragons held their nerve, stuck to the game plan and hammered their older opponents 3-0 with goals by Jack Jenkins, Jake Read and Charlie Dowling proving good football will always beat dirty tactics.
After a two hour break Dragons played the form team of the day, Centenary who played attacking football. Only a captain performance by Connor Berzinski, tenacious tackling by Connor White and Nicholas Rayner and sound goalkeeping by Lockie Weyand kept the score down to 1-0 at halftime.
Douglas never gave up and in the second half a long through ball by Charlie Dowling picked out Jack Carr who took his chance and drove the ball into the bottom corner to give the young Dragons a well deserved draw.
