Central Cougars claw back title
Last year they finished on top of the ladder at the end of the season but crashed out in two finals games to see themselves miss the all important grand final.
This year the Cougars had a perfect season cruising through undefeated and again taking the Minor Premiership Award. However, as a repeat of their last season they lost their first final's game against last year’s winners, Rattle N Rum.
They were given another chance for the last spot in the Grand Final in a do or die match against the Young Guns in which they took every opportunity and came out with a win.
Last night saw two teams with a lot of history and rivalry take the court in the hope of being named the 2011 Grand Final Winners, and this year it was Central Cougars' time to shine.
The Cougars started the game off strongly with an 8 goal lead, only allowing Rattle N Hum to convert 1 goal. This continued on into the second quarter with another 9 goals being scored compared to the 3 that Rattle managed to convert.
There was no stopping the Cougars and their experienced shooters had all but wrapped up the game by the third quarter with a lead of 12 goals.
The Rattle N Hum side, however, were never going to let the Cougars have an easy game. They made the winning side work hard for every ball they threw and received and intercepted the ball on a number of occasions in the goal area.
With both teams missing players from their regular season it was always going to be an interesting game - the Central team simply took every opportunity they could find by playing a very defensive game all down the court.
Congratulations to all players involved in the game with final score of 33 – 11.
Special congratulations to the Central Cougars Team: Nichelle Pitt, Sandra Burcombe, Danielle Bellero, Cassandra Cairns, Tania Wilson, Kerryn Bohm, Fiona Tesch, Michelle Pitt and Gemma Gwilliams on their Premiership title.
In the A-Reserve grand final, spectators witnessed the largest scoring game of the season with Julatten Jewels claiming a win over the Sugarland Shooters.
With a high scoring game of 60 – 27 the young Julatten team managed to double the Shooters' score every quarter of the game. The Shooters were left to play with only six players due to injury and illness, leaving them little chance in a Grand Final match.
Sugarland’s defence did all they could but it simply wasn’t enough with the Jewels reaching an impressive 17 goals in just one quarter.
Special Congratulations to the Julatten Jewels Team: Kayla Crookey, Rhiannon Schreiber-Blatner, Lily Hewson, Tiani Pascoe, Erin Jeffery, Brooke Rasmussen, Taylor Steviano and Maddy M on their big win.
The B grade grand final saw the game favourites, the Jets; take a win over the Breakers.
No one thought the Breakers had it in to make the Grand Final this season but make it they did and they went down fighting.
The Jets thought they were in for an easy win but were surprised when they were trailing by 1 goal by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter however they found their feet and game back to lead the game by 4 goals at half time.
The Breakers did the best they could and played one of their most impressive games of the season. Unfortunately this simply wasn’t enough to keep the Jets from claiming the Premiership Title.
They brought the game home with a final score of 24 – 11.
Special Congratualtions to the Jets Team: Grace Walker, Chrissy Lia, Karlie Brady, Angela Pringle, Meg Goodal, Karla Logan, Jade Harold, Natalie Littler and Anne M on a great winning season.
Overall it was a tremendous night of finals. Next week the club will have their annual presentation night awarding teams and individuals on their excellent performances throughout the year.
Thanks to Foodworks Port Douglas for donating 3 of the town's best hot chickens as prizes on the Grand Final evening.
