New space, big plans for Art House

Art House Port Douglas Inc. is invigorating the town's art scene, and their newly elected president Cheryl Wellham is welcoming budding artists with open arms.

The not-for-profit group originally formed in 2005 and had significant funding from the former Douglas Shire, but Ms Wellham said over the years funding and support has dwindled.

"We had quite a bit of funding set aside from Douglas Shire Council, it was about $200,000 they had set aside. . .but over the years this has been eroded of course with the amalgamation."

But where there's life there's hope and a kind gesture from local businessman, John Morris, meant a new location was found in which the group could work.

"He rang up and said he had a space at the Balley Hooley Station that he wasn't using and would we like to use it? So we got all our troops together and painted on weekends, it took months but we've got it semi-organised now and we're actually going to open it on 4 May," Ms Wellham said.

Art House Port Douglas Inc. will include lessons for people wanting to try their hand a various types of artistic endeavours.

"We need to get people in as beginners learning to draw, and once they've lost all their inhibitions and they feel totally relaxed they'll feel like joining and be part of our group.

"I only started two years ago and I just got swept away. It's all about having fun," she said.

The group has big plans for the coming months including the ability to offer painting, fabric, music, literary sessions, photography, and more social events.

Ms Wellham acknowledged the passion for art within the Port Douglas community, along with the many artists who visit the region.

"It's a great place for art, just look at the environment, it's wonderful, it can't help but inspire you."
