Tourism may win from $10b deal

Tourism could be a big winner after country Independents Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor supported the reelection of the Labor Government after negotiating a $10 billion package for regional Australia.

Managing director of the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC), Matthew Hingerty, was quoted as saying "… given the regional nature of their electorates tourism may have advanced its opportunity to get its voice heard."

The challenges for the tourism industry are many, and not least is the strength of the Australian Dollar which has hit 93 U.S. cents meaning holidays to other countries are a lot more affordable.

Federal MP for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch, who will be sworn in to the position in two weeks said he was conscious of the funding package and would be working to secure a portion for his electorate.
