Community groups are urged to apply for a share of $800,000 of state government grants to help them celebrate their cultural diversity in the coming year.

Member for Cook, Jason O’Brien MP, said the funding for the Multicultural Assistance Program represents an opportunity for community groups to run festivals, events and community development projects.

“This money gives the cultural communities of Queensland the means to educate others about their way of life, their values and their history," he said.

“Cook residents will be familiar with a significant festivals which have been supported through this program in recent years, including the Mareeba Multicultural Festival."

Mr Cook highlighted the fact that nearly 18 per cent of Queenslander's were born outside of Australia.

“The reality is these festivals and events bring people across Queensland together.

“The grants program also supports community relations projects that encourage social harmony like interfaith training programs."

Community groups can apply for funds starting from $1,000. Last year the Filipino-Australian Community Association of Mackay received $1000 for its 20th anniversary celebrations.

Applications for the latest round of Multicultural Assistance Program grants are now open, and will close on 15 November.
