It's all about you at the Expo

Over 200 visitors learned the art of looking after yourself at the Health and Well-being Expo, held at the Port Douglas Community Hall yesterday.

This year's theme was 'Activate and rejuvenate', and 46 stall holders were promoting that ethos, and encouraging attendees to get involved, and get healthy.

Expo organiser, Cairns Regional Council's Kerrie Hawkes, said it was important for residents to know what services they can access.

"This is a perfect opportunity for people to find out what's available to them locally.

"There's not just the physical or medical (services), it's an holistic approach to looking after yourself."

Stalls covered a wide variety of health and community services, from local emergency response units such as the SES and Ambulance, to alternative therapies including yoga, massage, and acupuncture.

Ron from the local SES unit said becoming a volunteer has many benefits. "The SES can provide a healthy and active lifestyle, and there's a real sense of being able to make a difference for your community.

Free workshops covering such diverse topics as meditation, crystal healing, salsa dancing, and even a senior's training session on using mobile phones attracted good numbers.

Organisers hope to see an even bigger Health and Well-being Expo in 2011.
