A feasibility study into the proposed swimming lagoon for Port Douglas is among the first projects to be rolled out in the implementation of Cairns Regional Council’s Port Douglas Waterfront Master Plan.

Mayor Val Schier said a feasibility study is required to determine the most suitable location for the waterfront swimming pool, of those locations indentified in the Master Plan. The study will also define the cost and economic benefit to the local and regional economy.

“The community has had a strong voice and input into the planning process.  Council has ensured that this Master Plan reflects its views and aspirations for the waterfront in Port Douglas,” Cr Schier said.

The Master Plan identifies the swimming lagoon as one of the key attractions of the waterfront development and that it will have great economic benefit for the town.

“The feasibility study has been brought forward as a result of consultation with the Port Douglas Waterfront Advisory Committee and so has become the next in a progression of steps that will ensure those community desires are realised,” Cr Schier said.

“Council has been consulting with the Advisory Committee since late August and the necessary geo-technical surveys and traffic assessments have been started. These initial works are being carried out to enable us to proceed with other parts of the project that are necessary to complete before construction can begin.”

Other Master Plan projects underway include planning scheme amendments, the landscape design guide, the preliminary layout for the waterfront park design and the Four Mile Beach Esplanade Upgrade Project.
