Candle-nuts for APC10
Preparations for the 10th Australasian Permaculture Convergence are in full swing, with the Candlenut Steiner School community rallying to accommodate the major environmental conference this month.
Candlenut will play host to Hollywood star, Daryl Hannah, who will be a guest speaker at the event being held from 24 to 27 September.
Candlenut Steiner School’s tranquil rainforest setting will become a hive of activity as leading activists from around the world discuss permaculture, which is based on applying the principles of natural ecosystems to human settlements and agriculture.
The school, situated on 42 acres in Kuranda north of Cairns, was a natural choice to host APC10 – its ethos is based on the insights offered by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, who was also the founder of biodynamic farming.
Daniele Serpa, an experienced chef from Nature’s Kitchen and parent at the school, is heading catering for up to 300 guests per meal over the four days of the convergence, with morning and afternoon tea also to be provided by school families.
Children at the school have maintained an organic garden and hot houses that will supply fresh vegetables and herbs for the event.
“Our Assembly Hall is complete, with a few finishing touches being added this week. This area will be used for some of the presentations, with classrooms being used for different workshops,” says Candlenut Steiner School Business Manager Majella Smith.
“One of our classrooms will be transformed into a permaculture shop with lots of interesting things for sale, including some of the school’s beautiful handmade craft.”
Ms Smith said APC10 tickets were selling fast and anyone who is interested in attending must register via the APC10 website.
Tickets for the Gala Dinner on 26 September are sold out.
